Puntland – Concerns are mounting over the arrests of journalists in Puntland after two reporters were detained within a short period while carrying out their journalistic work.
Journalist Suways, who regularly reports on news and events across Puntland, was recently arrested in Garowe.
Today, journalist Mohamed Jama was also arrested in Bosaso. His detention comes after he spent recent days reporting on the closure of parts of Bosaso’s markets and complaints from traders regarding what has been described as additional taxes imposed on goods arriving through the Port of Bosaso.
As of now, the Puntland authorities have not issued an official statement explaining the reasons for the arrests of the two journalists.
The arrests have heightened concerns about press freedom in Puntland, with media rights organizations continuing to call for the protection of journalists and their right to carry out their work freely and independently.
