The United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan, along with a delegation he is leading, has arrived in Puntland

visit aimed at addressing the ongoing political disputes among Somali leaders.

In recent weeks, Swan has been touring different federal member states, seeking a compromise on the electoral process planned for 2026.

The Presidents of Puntland and Jubaland, together with members of the Somalia Rescue Forum, are pushing for a return to the indirect electoral system used in 2022. On the other hand, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), along with the Presidents of Galmudug, Hirshabelle, South West State, and several Somali politicians who previously held positions in the FGS and regional administrations, are advocating for a one-person, one-vote system, and oppose handing over control of the electoral process to the federal member state leaders.
