The Regional Parliament of the newly formed Northeastern State elected Abdikadir Ahmed Aw-Ali, known as Firdhiye, as its first president on Saturday. The vote took place in Laascaanood.
Parliament now has leadership in place for the 2025–2030 term. Lawmakers also completed votes for speaker and other posts. The new legislature counts 83 members, according to the verification committee.
Five names were on the ballot for top posts. Campaigning and lobbying were visible in the hours before the session. Observers described tense negotiations inside and outside the chamber.
Officials close to the process said parts of the federal government engaged with candidates and delegates. Some local figures welcomed the engagement. Others said outside influence should be limited while the new state builds its institutions.
The immediate tasks for the new administration are clear. Security in parts of the region must improve. Public services and aid delivery need coordination. The parliament and the president must publish a roadmap with timelines and accountable steps.
Reactions from neighboring administrations and federal authorities varied. National leaders issued congratulatory notes. Regional actors said they will monitor how powers are shared and how the state interacts with existing authorities.
Doogsan Media will track appointments and policy moves from the new office. We will report on security updates, governance decisions, and responses from Puntland and Somaliland. Expect follow up coverage as events unfold.
